Old breakthrough: what is the health hazard?
Bone fracture is one of the most common trauma that causes a person to seek urgent medical care. Medicine has been dealing with the problem of bone fracture since ancient times, and the basic principles of treating these injuries are the same – fixing the damaged limb (fracture site), resting time for recovery. However, quite often, there are cases where the old fracture caused complications and injured joints, incorrectly brought up a bone, a person received a complex multiple fracture with splitting of bone, etc. In such cases, modern surgical methods of treatment, such as metalloosteosynthesis (repositioning of bony fragments with various fixative structures) and joints endoprosthesis, are used.
Older injuries are dangerous
Traumatology subdivides fractures of bones by the limitation period into fresh (up to 3-4 days), stale (3-4 weeks) and old (old, from a month or more). Not only fractures, but also injuries, in which a person does not always turn for help to a doctor, often lead to the development of pathological processes in the joints, accelerate dystrophic changes in them. Fractures in most cases occur when falling, car accidents, sports loads, etc., and therefore do not do without bruises and often accompanied by hematomas (in common people – bruises).
If the treatment of the fracture and extensive hematomas is correct, with the use of competent therapy, then in most cases the adhesive in the muscular-ligament apparatus was not formed. However, often the victims themselves underestimate the severity of injuries, overload the damaged limbs, repeated injuries (bruises), and also overcooling can lead to complications. For example, overload of knee joints, especially after an injury, provokes an inflammatory process that over time leads to the destruction of cartilage and bone tissue. As a result, for complete relief from the problem of one drug treatment becomes insufficient and replacement of the joint is required – endoprosthesis.
Incorrect fracture or false joint – what is it?
To make the bones after the fracture fused correctly and accurately, traumatologists use the plaster, bone extraction, connect the fractures with metal plates, etc. However, quite often in a patient under the influence of various factors there are problems with the consolidation of tubular bones. After the fracture, when the bones of the damaged bones are brought together, a so-called bony callus, a shapeless, loose mass, should be formed, which restores bone tissue between bone fractures.
However, not always the consolidation occurs normally: the adjoining and rubbing edges of the broken bone can smooth out and lead to the formation of a false joint – pseudoarthrosis. According to medical statistics, a false joint is formed in 5-11% of cases of closed fractures treatment and in 8-35% of cases of open fractures treatment. Most often, pseudoarthrosis occurs after the fracture of the radius of the forearm, neck of the thigh, and also congenital pathologies of the false joint of the leg.
Treatment of chronic fractures and pseudoarthrosis
If the use of medication, physiotherapy, etc. does not give a result, a person is forced to suffer pain, limit himself in motion, constantly take painkillers, the specialist, depending on each individual case, will recommend metalloosteosynthesis or endoprosthesis of the joints.
Modern surgical treatment, a large selection of prosthetics from quality and safe materials, help the patient to return to normal after surgery. Treatment of false joint and chronic fractures is carried out by the orthopedist-traumatologist, endoprosthesis – by the surgeon.
